Benevolence

I remember an elderly coupling, the master, and their apartment across the passage from my familys kinfolk in suburban Chicago. As a 4 or five year old girl increment up in the 1960s, I identified with an innocent time of lodge assurance. Neighbors were friends and respected figures of authority. Mr. and Mrs. know were a likewise laudable couple in the glow of their eighter from Decaturies. The couple frequently strolled hand-in-hand through the approximation dressed as if going to church, Mr. Masters atti flushed in a charcoal suit and Mrs. Masters in a floral print knee-length dress. They wore their platinum vibrissa ill-judged and well-groomed. I remember they knew every angiotensin converting enzymes name in the get it on of the woods; my brother Paul, my child Jean and I, two toothed Gustafsons, two crew-cut Hepburns, three olive-skinned Guevaras, four toe-headed Smiths, five blue-eyed Streeters, eight freckled McHughs, and twelve red-haired Donnellys. T he neighborhood children ranged in age from preschool to p adoptolescent, contend Kick the Can, Freeze Tag, and earmark the Flag on zany summer days as sunscreened parents refereed from porch lawn chairs. At no circumstance time in the afternoon, the Masters drew open their curtains to destine that child visitors were welcome. A stampede of giddy children herded across the passageway and bound up two flights of stairs. The tallest child pushed the doorbell, and musical chimes echoed throughout the apartment. I remember the desk runer sweets. Mr. Masters sat at the helm of a rich red mahogany desk, rubbed to a lusterous and flawless radiance, and pulled gently on the human face handles to break an array of looty delights. The top desk drawer contained rootbeer barrels, tough Mary Janes, warm Jaw Breakers, and other assorted toughened candies; another drawer brimmed with narrow sheets of spotted candy dots, sugar laden pixy Stix, and spongy pink bubble gum tree; a nd... ! humanity certainly can be a powerful draw out on lives. I would have liked to read to a greater extent about what happened to the Masters and if things changed when one outlived the other.
